Doctor Who, is really a Brit thing, but there are American fans – in fact, according to The Mail on Sunday a few weeks ago, Doctor Who has an worldwide audience of 250 MILLION. That’s alot of fans! In fact, DW [Doctor Who] fans are nicknamed Whovians and, according to John Barrowman, the star of the spin-off Torchwood, TW [Torchwood] fans are called Woodies. The series stopped for a while, but started back up in 2005.
Here’s the basic character low-down on DW & TW:
The Doctor:
Currently played by: David Tennant
A time-travelling Time Lord, and last of his kind. We’re currently on our 10th Doctor, as when the Doctor, he regenerates, i.e – the actor is sick of DW and leaves, so someone else takes his place. Lol. He’s got this blue box, which travels in space in time called the T.A.R.D.I.S, T.ime A.nd R.elative D.imensions I.n S.pace.
Past Companians from the new series:
Rose Tyler:
Played By: Billie Piper
FROM SERIES ONE-TWO + GUEST APPEARANCE IN SERIES FOUR
19 year old Rose is working as a shop assistant in London, and has a boyfriend Mickey Smith and mother Jackie Tyler. Her father Pete Tyler died when she was a baby. The 9th Doctor saves her when the shop’s mannequins turn out to be aliens, and Rose becomes his assistant. When the 9th Doctor regenerates [i.e wanted to leave the show], Rose stays with the 10th Doctor until she is trapped in a parallel universe at the end of series two. She is there until the last three episodes of series four and then returns to the parallel universe with the half-human Doctor [LOL - I know it's confusing. Just go watch the episodes!]
Marha Jones:
Played By: Freema Agyeman
SERIES THREE AND + GUEST APPEARANCE IN SERIES 4
When the hospital she works at is teleported to the Moon, medical student Martha helps save the day alongside the Doctor, who promises her one trip, but she ends up being his companion. Nevertheless, she becomes annoyed that the Doctor is oblivious to her feelings for him, and she believes that she is simply a rebound after the Doctor’s painful loss of Rose Tyler [see above]. She leaves at the end of series three as she can’t waste her life waiting for someone who doesn’t feel the same way about her, but she gives him her phone so she can contact him. She comes back in an episode mid-Series 4, and it’s revealed she’s engaged and senior doctor in UNIT. She also comes back for the last two episodes of Series 4, and as she leaves, Captain Jack Harkness comments “I’m not sure about UNIT these days… maybe there’s something else you could be doing.”
Astrid Perth:
Played By: Kylie – IS there another Kylie?
An one-off companion to the Doctor, in the Xmas Episode, “The Voyage of the Damned”. She is introduced aboard the starship Titanic as a waitress, and dreams of seeing the stars, and meets the 10th Doctor on the ship. She and the Doctor discover the plan of Max Capricorn to destroy the Titanic, its passengers and the nearby people of Earth with his villainous angelic robots, the Host. She sacrifices herself to save the Doctor from Capricorn by driving Capricorn off a platform with a forklift truck and both appear to fall and die. Later, realising Astrid was still wearing a teleporter bracelet, the Doctor attempts to recall her atoms in an attempt to resurrect her, but there is insufficient power aboard the damaged Titanic to do so.
Torchwood Team [Current]:
Captain Jack Harkness:
Played by: John Barrowman
Jack is a time traveller and former con man from the 51st century, who, lets just say, likes anything with a postcode [Lol]. As a consequence of his death and resurrection in the 2005 series finale of Doctor Who, the character becomes immortal, a lasting change throughout his appearances in both series. Jack eventually becomes the leader of Torchwood, a British organisation dedicated to combating alien threats. Jack returns to DW in the Series Three and Series Four last few episodes.
Gwen Cooper
Played by: Eve Myles
Gwen was a South Wales Police officer until she was recruited by Jack. She has a fiancee [later husband] named Rhys. Gwen has compassion which was what prompted Jack to hire her. At the end of S2 TW, she, Jack and Yanto are mourning Owen and Toshiko. She appears in the last two episodes of DW.
MORE COMING LATER!
